No Sugar for Bess in July (no unnecessary single-use plastic either)

Story

Hiya Folks,

Did you know a whopping 9 million tonnes of plastic will enter the worlds ocean this year?

I'm raising money for the Cairns and Far North Environment Centre by choosing to refuse single use plastic this July (AND refined sugar!!)

So, I'm going to be away for 3 weeks of July without any control over what food I'm given, where I’m staying etc.  Let's hope there isn't much plastic as I'll be travelling with an environmentally conscious company, however it was bad timing for going 100% plastic free as elements of my life will be out of my control. Instead I've opted to ditch the top 4 plastic items for July: straws, plastic bottles, plastic bags and coffee cups PLUS GIVE UP REFINED SUGAR FOR THE WHOLE MONTH.

I thought it would be hard to get anyone to donate for me use my keep cup for a month when I've been hounding everyone else to use theirs for years (hah!) BUT giving up sugar will be a real challenge (and I'll probably go crazy) so please make this self-induced madness worth it by donating to the amazing non-profit I work for. Your money will go toward campaigns like our Plastic: It all adds up campaign and other great environmental work in Far North Queensland.

Can you support me?

The actions we take add up and together can make a real difference to the plastic adding up in our oceans.

I'm fundraising for the Cairns and Far North Envrionment Centre (CAFNEC) who have been advocating for environmental protection in Far North Queensland since 1981.

Plastic pollution and the impact of marine debris on our marine life is a BIG issue. Your donation is much needed to help CAFNEC support initatives such as the CAFNEC Marine Response Team - a group of dedicated volunteers taking action to protect our Far North Queensland (FNQ) marine environment.

The team are currently working to harness support in FNQ for a state-wide plastic bag ban and container deposit scheme. Together, they are the brains and energy behind the Plastic: It All Adds Up campaign

Please support my efforts to reduce my plastic use by making a secure online donation and by posting a message of support. Donations made through this platform are secure and will be remitted directly through to my charity of choice.

Thanks so much for your support!

Cairns and Far North Environment Centre Inc (CAFNEC) Gift Fund

The Cairns and Far North Environment Centre (CAFNEC) is a not-for-profit incorporated association which acts as conservation council for the region from Cardwell north to Torres Strait and from the east coast to the Gulf of Carpentaria. The Great Barrier Reef and Wet Tropics World Heritage Areas are included. Collaboration with other conservation organisations on environmental issues of state and national importance has become increasingly important.

CAFNEC also plays an important role within the broader environmental movement, collaborating with other organisations focusing on environmental issues of state and national importance.

CAFNEC relies heavily on the work and dedication of volunteers and supporters. A voluntary management committee is elected by association members, both individuals and conservation groups. Membership is open to anyone who values the natural environment and accepts the objectives and rules of the association.

Most of our funding comes from donations, fundraising and small government grants. Special purpose grants from foundations and government agencies, each separately acquitted, have covered such varied projects as a sustainability conference, rehabilitation in the Cairns Central Swamp, a campaign for a Coral Sea marine park, Cape York World Heritage assessment, and promotion of domestic solar panels.
